Jan Cleere is one of three First Place winners in the At-large division of the NFPW 2021 Communications Contest!
Jan won 1st place in the Books, Biography or History category. Her entry, Military Wives in Arizona Territory: A History of Women Who Shaped the Frontier, will go on to the national level of judging. National award winners will receive a Certificate of Achievement at the NFPW National Communications Conference Awards banquet to be held in Fargo, ND June 23-25.

We had strong entries from entrants from Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Spain, Washington D.C. and Washington state.”

President’s message for November, 2019

In November we start planning for the holidays. Some may have family members over to their home; others share the days with friends and neighbors. Lots of writing takes place even if it’s just in cards and email notes.
This year, my first Thanksgiving as president, I am writing to you, the members of APW, to say “Thank you” for your commitment to your chapter by attending meetings to share your writing stories and learn more from excellent speakers.
We have recruited several new members in Central and Rim Country Chapters. There are new ideas to get the word out about you as a writer and to promote APW. Jaimie Bruzenak, our webmaster, has sent out a call to see who might be interested in participating in developing a short video for YouTube or an audio Podcast. Let us know what you think about this idea.
We are excited to announce our plans for 2020 including:
APW representation at the ASU Desert Nights Rising Stars Writers Conference on February 22 by six members: Jan Cleere, Jody Sharpe, Susan Anderson, Jane Ruby, Mary Rechkemmer Meyer and Barbara Lacy. To help with the registration fee, each author will pay a small amount to participate with APW taking up the remainder of the cost. This is just one advantage of being an APW member.
Plans are in place for a spring conference on May 7 in Payson. More info later. Save the date.
Don’t forget Rim Country’s Payson Book Festival July 18, 2020. Sign up early in January to hold your place.

APW member Jane Eppinga passed away
Sad news to report:
Tucson has always been blessed with an abundance of creative people–particularly writers. One unique and talented voice was silenced today with the death of Jane Eppinga. Jane, a prolific writer, told us mostly true stories, mostly of Arizona’s past. She did it with enthusiasm and precision and dedication to accuracy. I first met Jane at a meeting of the Society of Southwest Authors. I saw her standing in a line and somewhat timidly approached her, because I knew she had a reputation for being a grande dame of Arizona writing. She quickly made me feel relaxed with her friendliness and genuine desire to be helpful. If she was a grande dame of anything, she didn’t know it! Jane took delight in many things–particularly her trips to Holland where she visited family. She lived alone, but connected to an enormous community of writers and readers. Readers are poorer for the lack of her voice in new works, but we will always have the multitude of books and articles she left behind. — written by former APW member Bunny Badertscher

Time: 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Lunch and APW Southern Chapter meeting to follow from 12 to 2:30
Place: 3003 W Broadway Blvd, #124, Tucson. Park West Palms Mobile Home Park. Lunch will be outdoors in the Ramada, weather permitting. Bring a swimsuit and towel if you’d like to swim in the heated pool and hot tub after the meeting.

Dianne Ebert Beeaff won honorable mention in the category- “Short Stories- Single Story,” for A Packet of Arthritis Pills in the Potomac Review Issue 62, Spring 2018.
Jan Cleere won two honorable mentions in the category- “Columns/General.” Jan won for her articles in Western Women columns that she writes for the Tucson Arizona Daily Star.

Former 1979 APW President Jackie Cobbledick passed away
Jacquelyn Cobbledick
Jacquelyn Staats Cobbledick, 91, journalist and former president of APW, died December 20, 2016 in Tucson. Born in 1925 in Wheeling, WV to Edna Morford Staats and Paul Staats, Jackie was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, William Gordon (Bill) Cobbledick. She is survived by sons, Daniel W. Cobbledick (Sheila Wilensky) and Keith G. Cobbledick, of Tucson, and daughter, Beth Kane, of Catalina. She is also survived by grandson, Fenix (aka Connor) Cobbledick, of Philadelphia, and brother-in-law, Dorn Cobbledick of Chagrin Falls, Ohio.
Jackie and Bill met when she was nine and he was 10 in Russell Township, near Chagrin Falls, Ohio. An Ohio Wesleyan University journalism graduate, Jackie wrote ad copy for WREO radio in Ashtabula, Ohio, then was city editor for the Star Beacon newspaper in Ashtabula. In 1969 she moved to Tucson with her family, where she became associate director of the University of Arizona News Bureau. After earning her master’s in journalism, she was an assistant professor of journalism at the UA. She retired in 2008 from the Arizona Daily Star, where she served for years as a city editor. She couldn’t resist marking up almost every publication she read with a red pen! Jackie and Bill enjoyed camping and traveling all over the western U.S. She was well-known for her loving kindness and honesty. No one could ask for a better mom, and we will miss her very much.
No services were held.

Dig out your cowboy hats and boots and join the APW Southern District “Writing the West” luncheon at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 22, El Charro Cafe, 311 N. Court Ave., Tucson. This is the day before the Arizona History Convention begins in Tucson, so out-of-towners going to the history convention should plan to join us. APW members and Tucson-based western history writers Jane Eppinga, Jane Cleere, and Barbara Marriott speak about their latest work and recommendations to attendees who might wish to start writing in this genre (nonfiction and fiction). Award-winning author Jane Eppinga has had numerous books traditionally published including Arizona Twilight Tales; Nogales: Life and Times on the Frontier; Images of America (series): Tombstone, Tucson, Apache Junction and Superstition Mountains; Arizona Sheriffs: Badges and Bad Men; and They Made Their Mark: An Illustrated History of the Society of Woman Geographers. She has also written more than 300 articles for both popular and professional publications.
Born in Hampshire, England, Mike Sedgwick has traveled extensively and lived in Wales, Belgium, Minnesota, and Arizona. He began writing fiction, mostly short stories, in the 1980s and self-published his first novel, Bramdean, in 2010 for which he won first prize in the Arizona Authors Association Literary Competition. His other books include Of Heaven & Earth, Light on a Distant Shore, and Report from Mars. Mike also writes short stories in a wide range of genres.
Susan Dawson-Cook has e-published five romantic suspense novels under the pseudonym Sabrina Devonshire. Her books include Water Swimmer; Message from Viola Mari; Dangerous Descent (Love in the Labyrinths, Book 1); The Unseen (Love in the Labyrinths, Book 2); and Seaside Seduction. Her latest e-book, Never Let You Go, was released last month. As a certified fitness professional, she is a contributing editor to American Fitness magazine and often authors for Swimmer and The Romance Writers Report.
