Our joint program with the Arizona Newspapers Association was held on September 28, 2019.
The Fall Conference was a success! Gwen Larson, president of NFPW, met with members, talked about NFPW and participated in the First Amendment panel with Gregg Leslie, executive director of ASU Sandra Day O’Conner College of Law First Amendment Legal Clinic. Gwen is active in the NFPW First Amendment Network. This is a hot topic in today’s world.
Mark Athtakis, freelance writer, spoke on “Writing for Free? How to make money in today’s media market..” His presentation was sponsored by the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing at Arizona State University. His mantra about one’s writing, “Touch it every day.”
Matt Adelman, incoming president, National Newspaper Association, gave the lunch keynote address about the newspaper’s role in today’s changing media environment.
Jodi Weisburg entertained us with a standup comedy routine and talked about how to use humor in your writing.
Julia Wallace spoke about “Women in Journalism: What Women Have Learned about Leadership in Media.” She co-authored “There’s No Crying in Newsrooms: What Women Have Learned About What It Takes to Lead” and substituted for her co-author Kristin Gilger, who was ill. Julia Wallace is the Frank Russell Chair in the Business of Journalism and leads various innovative efforts at Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Her perspective was especially timely in today’s journalism climate.
