Patricia Brooks to speak May 18 – Rim Country

Rim Country APW Chapter meeting will be held Wednesday, May 18th, Noon, at a NEW LOCATION: the Majestic Rim Retirement Living 310 East Tyler Parkway, Payson AZ. Patricia Brooks will be speaking on Write the Memoir You’re Afraid to Write.  This is a free event, open to the public. No RSVP required.

In an encouraging and insightful presentation, Patricia L. Brooks will help you capture your untold story that must be told.  Through her presentation:  “Write the Memoir you’re Afraid to Write” she will share with you how to write this memoir to your own satisfaction so you can face your fears, get past the facts and conquer the story’s emotional truth.

 With tips and techniques from her daring new second memoir, Three Husbands and a Thousand Boyfriends, Patricia will inspire you to take the necessary steps to keep a working journal, write weekly goals and make no excuses about what you write.  She will stimulate your creative talents by showing you how to break through your silence, find your voice and give yourself permission to tell your story.

AZ History Convention logoIF YOU ARE GOING TO THE 2016 ARIZONA HISTORY CONVENTION IN YUMA, join APW for lunch on Saturday, April 16, 2016. The lunch starts promptly at 11:30 a.m. at the Da Boyz Italian Cuisine restaurant at 284 South Main St., Yuma.  According to MapQuest, this restaurant is 1 minute away from the Hilton Garden Inn & Pivot Point Conference Center where the Arizona History Convention is taking place.  You will have plenty of time to join us at 11:30 a.m. and have lunch without missing out on the Arizona History Convention morning and afternoon programs. Author Jan Cleere to speak to Central District April 1, 2016

APW member Jan Cleere from Tucson discusses her new book, “Never Don’t Pay Attention: The Life of Rodeo Photographer Louise L. Serpa,”Cleere Jan Author Pic at the monthly APW Central District meeting. Jan will talk about what it took to write her proposal for the book as well as share her chapter outlines submitted to the publishers. Also, she will reveal what it takes to market a book in today’s publishing world. Bring your questions and writing friends.

April 2016 TypeRider

The April, 2016 issue of TypeRider is here. As usual, it is loaded with articles and upcoming writing events. Find summaries of past district programs and descriptions of upcoming ones. The Payson Book Festival is on track for July 23 and you can find out how to participate. You’ll want to read Betty Webb’s article, “Me and My Shadow Self,” and how to make your writing more appealing to the reader. Improve your craft by marking and attending some of the many events listed in the Calendar section that will be offered this spring.

Rim Country to meet March 16

The next APW Rim Country chapter meeting will be held on March 16th, 2016, at 1pm in the Library meeting room.

After brief announcements, our speaker will be Carole Mathewson.

California native Carole Emma Mathewson has resided in Payson, Arizona since 1992. Having majored in English and Early Childhood Education, she has been a preschool teacher and a secretary—executive and legal. She was a newspaper reporter/copy editor for 10 years.

Mathewson is the author of: The Waste of War—The Story of a Civil War Union Surgeon and his Nurse, published in December 2014; and The Hostess of Providence: A One-woman, One-act Play, presented by Mathewson on stage in 1985 and published in 2011. Both are available online at her Author Page on Amazon. Mathewson has three additional books in progress, and is ready to go to press with World War II on the Home Front.

Payson-area author Carole Emma Mathewson will speak about her book, The Waste of War: The Story of a Civil War Union Surgeon and his Nurse. Mathewson will discuss the nine chapters of the book. The story concerns her great-grandparents and their contribution to the Civil War. Her grandparents were Dr. Harley P. Mathewson, a graduate of Dartmouth Medical School, and his wife Mary Sanborn Mathewson, who served as his nurse throughout the war. Mathewson devoted a number of years to researching the work, which is 336 pages in length.

Join Jan Cleere at the Tucson Rodeo

Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the rodeo and the images captured by Hall of Fame rodeo photographer Louise Serpa at the 91st Annual La Fiesta de los Vaqueros, Feb. 20-28. Jan Cleere will be there with her latest book, “Never Don’t Pay Attention” The Life of Rodeo Photographer  Louise L. Serpa.
Look for Cleere’s booth on the Tucson rodeo grounds.

Betty Webb shares her insights in “That Pesky First Chapter.” A copy of the notes from Shirin McGraham’s January presentation to the Colorado District meeting, “Writing for newspapers/Associated Press style” are included and may be printed for your referral.

Arizona Professional Writers Offers Workshop for Aspiring Self-Publishers

Arizona Professional Writers is offering “What’s New in Self-Publishing,” a two-hour workshop for writers to hear from the experts and gain useful tips about this emerging publishing genre. The workshop will be held on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2016 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Shepherd of the Hills United Church of Christ, 5524 E. Lafayette Ave., Phoenix, Arizona. Registration with breakfast pastries and coffee starts at 9:30 a.m.

“What’s New in Self-Publishing” will feature a panel of industry experts, beginning with Linda F. Radke, president and founder of Five Star Publications, Inc., and author of The Economical Guide to Self-Publishing and Linda F. Radke’s Promote Like a Pro, who has more than 30 years’ experience in the traditional, partnership and self-publishing arenas and serves as a publishing consultant.

Other panel members include:
  • Connie Cockrell, a self-published author of 13 books who has been included in five anthologies and EverydayFiction.com after her daughter challenged her to write in 2011.
  • Linda Smock, a retired elementary school teacher and children’s author who has self-published seven picture books on CreateSpace and Kindle in the last year. The books feature characters based on animals in her household and neighborhood.
  • Brenda Warneka, an editor and writer, who has edited a variety of books, including the APW anthology “Skirting Traditions: Arizona Writers and Journalists, 1912-2012.”

Following the workshop, attendees are invited to meet for a no-host lunch at Kitchen 56, 3433 N. 56th St., Phoenix, Arizona.

Barbara Lacy, Phoenix Central District Director, states, “For over 50 years Arizona Professional Writers has offered writing workshops. Now we want to help emerging self-publishers achieve their goals.”

The workshop is free for members of Arizona Professional Writers and $10 for the public.
