Author Jan Cleere to speak to Central District April 1, 2016
at the monthly APW Central District meeting. Jan will talk about what it took to write her proposal for the book as well as share her chapter outlines submitted to the publishers. Also, she will reveal what it takes to market a book in today’s publishing world. Bring your questions and writing friends.
April 2016 TypeRider
The April, 2016 issue of TypeRider is here. As usual, it is loaded with articles and upcoming writing events. Find summaries of past district programs and descriptions of upcoming ones. The Payson Book Festival is on track for July 23 and you can find out how to participate. You’ll want to read Betty Webb’s article, “Me and My Shadow Self,” and how to make your writing more appealing to the reader. Improve your craft by marking and attending some of the many events listed in the Calendar section that will be offered this spring.
Arizona Professional Writers Offers Workshop for Aspiring Self-Publishers
Arizona Professional Writers is offering “What’s New in Self-Publishing,” a two-hour workshop for writers to hear from the experts and gain useful tips about this emerging publishing genre. The workshop will be held on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2016 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Shepherd of the Hills United Church of Christ, 5524 E. Lafayette Ave., Phoenix, Arizona. Registration with breakfast pastries and coffee starts at 9:30 a.m.
“What’s New in Self-Publishing” will feature a panel of industry experts, beginning with Linda F. Radke, president and founder of Five Star Publications, Inc., and author of The Economical Guide to Self-Publishing and Linda F. Radke’s Promote Like a Pro, who has more than 30 years’ experience in the traditional, partnership and self-publishing arenas and serves as a publishing consultant.
- Connie Cockrell, a self-published author of 13 books who has been included in five anthologies and EverydayFiction.com after her daughter challenged her to write in 2011.
- Linda Smock, a retired elementary school teacher and children’s author who has self-published seven picture books on CreateSpace and Kindle in the last year. The books feature characters based on animals in her household and neighborhood.
- Brenda Warneka, an editor and writer, who has edited a variety of books, including the APW anthology “Skirting Traditions: Arizona Writers and Journalists, 1912-2012.”
Following the workshop, attendees are invited to meet for a no-host lunch at Kitchen 56, 3433 N. 56th St., Phoenix, Arizona.
Barbara Lacy, Phoenix Central District Director, states, “For over 50 years Arizona Professional Writers has offered writing workshops. Now we want to help emerging self-publishers achieve their goals.”
The workshop is free for members of Arizona Professional Writers and $10 for the public.

First TypeRider of 2016!
Thanks to editor Lynda Exley, our January, 2016 issue – the first of 2016 – is here! Read about the December holiday parties and an intriguing article, “Do words, gemstones have anything in common?” by Marion E. Gold. Three APW districts are holding meetings this month so be sure to mark them on your calendar. You’ll find several APW members presenting elsewhere and many writing events to inspire you and add to your knowledge coming up this month and beyond. If you are considering participating in the 2nd Payson Book Festival, read more about it and act soon before all available author tables are gone! Information on the NFPW Communication Contest is also included.

“The Wild West and More” at Guidon Books
On October 15, APW Central District presents “The Wild West and More” at Guidon Books. Writers, readers and historians will enjoy this presentation as proprietor Shelly Dudley talks about the bookstore and their extensive collections, how readers expectations and interests have changed over the years and how she can find the research or reading you are searching for.
When: Thursday, October 15. 6 p.m. social time, 6:30 p.m. potluck – bring finger foods to share for dinner. Paper goods and beverages provided.
