October Business Expo
From Connie Cockrell, APW president and Rim Country Chairperson:
The Rim Country chapter of APW is a member of the Chamber and so we get notice of upcoming events. Feel free to sign up for the Chamber breakfast/lunch or other events. I am thinking of attending the Business Showcase on October 23. I’d like to have 2-3 other authors join me in sharing the booth. Drop me an email at connie.cockrell@gmail.com ASAP if you’re interested. You must be a member of APW to participate.
Here’s the description: In October we will be holding our 2nd Annual Flea Market Business Expo. Held at the Payson High School parking lot on Saturday, October 23rd from 10am to 2pm, this event is a great low-cost marketing and networking opportunity. There will be music provided by KRIM, food trucks and we encourage businesses to bring candy for any trick-or-treaters who stop by. Spaces are $100 for Chamber members and half of the proceeds will go to the DECA program at the high school. Please reserve your space by October 15th. And be sure to ask about our sponsorship opportunities for more bang for your marketing bucks!
Testimonial – Barbara Lacy
Barbara Lacy, after attending the September virtual Central Meeting with guest Shasha Graham, wrote this. Barbara has been active in APW for more than 30 years and held the position of Central Chapter Chairperson until a year ago. Barbara had a long career in journalism but now satisfies her creative urge through painting. One of her paintings is below.
“Yes, I have left life as a writer and now present as a painter. In fact, my first show of the season opens at 6 p.m., October 1, 2021, at the Olney Gallery, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 100 West Roosevelt, Phoenix, AZ And more are coming after that!
So why do I still belong to APW and try to attend all the meetings? (I don’t know what my record is over 30+ years, but few would have a better attendance record l than I do.) The answer is simple! Writers (you) and artists are the most interesting people I know! Yes, I have left life as a writer and now present as a painter but I want friends who have a passion for the arts or what ever excites them: saving the environment, teaching history working with refugees that gives their lives that extra spark. It is that extra spark I look for in friends. And why I hang out with writers!”
Thanks, Barbara!

“If you’ve ever contemplated leaving a job and starting something completely new, you’ve probably also thought about all the good reasons not to. In her sixties, she took on a different challenge—to begin a second career as a novelist.
What was it like for Sheila to start over again? How does her experience compare to that of others facing a life transition? How does writing compare to running a museum? Sheila will share lessons learned, with time for Q&A.
