Payson Book Festival – July 25, 2015
Join us in Payson in the cool pines beneath the Mogollon Rim for Payson’s first ever book festival. More than 60 authors will participate. Gila Community College and Arizona Professional Writers (APW) are partnering to present the Payson Book Festival on July 25, 2015, at the Payson campus, 201 N. Mud Springs Rd. in Payson, Arizona.
This is a family-oriented event and is offered to the public free of charge. A children’s element will feature story time, a young writer’s workshop and an opportunity to meet “Story Monster.” Entertainment, workshops, speakers and author signings will take place throughout the day. Rim Country May 20 meeting

Rim Country District will have a special guest speaker for the meeting this month, scheduled for May 20, at noon in the community room of the Payson Public Library.
Beginnings and endings – get it right!
Join the Rim District of Arizona Professional Writers for their monthly meeting on April 15. The topic is “Beginnings and Endings”….. two areas that challenge writers of fiction and non-fiction. Participants are invited to bring some samples of good ones and the group will then do some creative exercises. Both those who write novels and magazine articles will benefit.
Rim Country Literacy is having a book drive, so please bring a book to donate to this cause. The meeting will be held at noon in the community room of the Payson Public Library.

April 2015 TypeRider now available!
You won’t want to miss the April, 2015 TypeRider! It’s full of news about recent happenings throughout the state and about upcoming events. There are a number of Western-themed events coming up highlighted in this issue: a tour of the new Museum of the West in Scottsdale, the Southern District’s “Writing the West” lunch and talk, plus information about the Arizona History Convention held this year in Tucson at the end of the month. Rim Country District meeting – March 18, 2015
Learn how to use your computer more effectively at a free program presented by Arizona Professional Writers (formerly Arizona Press Women) on March 18, at the Payson Public Library, 328 N. McLane Road, Payson.
Starting at noon in the community room, the group’s March meeting will feature speaker Ray Baxter, who teaches two computer courses at Gila Community College and is President of the Payson Area Computer Association. Baxter serves as Director of APCUG, an International Association of Technology and Computer User Groups. He also provides consulting services.
Many people encounter computer problems and find it difficult to keep up with changes in technology. This computer expert will demystify programs, discuss security concerns and offer tips for success in his talk, “Using Your Computer More Effectively.”

If you haven’t seen the August, 2014 TypeRider, take a look now! It’s another issue packed with information. Read about the Rim Country Wrtier’s Retreat, meet Suzanne Pickett Martinson and the law about using photography of people in public places. There is also a long list of local writing-related activities. Be sure to check them out.
Rim Country Writer’s Retreat a success!
Sixteen overnight APW members, spouses, and and including four non-member writers, plus three others who came during the day, attended the writer’s retreat at the Merritt Center just north of Payson, under the Mogollon Rim.
Tucked away in tall ponderosa pines, the secluded mountain lodge provided time to relax, a choice of activities and good food. A number of activities such as creating a vision board, journaling, taking creative photos, and writing exercises were offered. Many did their own thing. Hammocks invited relaxation, nearby woods begged to be explored. Several walked the native stone labyrinth. One spouse painted, another explored nearby attractions.
Betty Merritt, owner and founder, gave us a history of the lodge and shared her mission of helping veterans. We also gathered at mealtimes and got to know each other better. The food was delicious with plenty of snacks in between.

Saturday night we were fortunate to have entertainment. Gail Hearne gave a presentation on Leo the MGM Lion when he spent unexpected time in the wilderness in Rim Country. After that Kathleen Kelly & Jim West entertained us in the patio with a variety of music.
Sunday morning Betty Merritt led those who wanted to go on a short hike up to a sacred Native American site and invited us to participate in a ceremony.
After the hike and breakfast, some participated in writing exercises.
We wrapped up with a delicious lunch and group photo. Pam Stevenson presented Betty with a copy of Skirting Traditions, signed by the authors who were there. It was a relaxing but refreshing experience. Everyone came away with something valuable.
